Eli, the sin eater, was born unclean. Sealed away in a monastery he has never seen the outside. Even the other monks fear him, and his ability to absolve men by taking their sins into his own body. When the monastery is destroyed by the monster Eachem, Eli is thrust into the world for the first time. But the sins that putrefy in his body are so toxic that his touch is a plague.
When Eli meets a young boy fleeing royal assassins, his unique ability to kill proves protection enough to get them passage on a ship bound for Altaltia. But in their wake, the red tide rises: Eachem, the Emperor and the whispers of a new God.
