Stop and Think

“I read today that mostly people speak with the intention of making themselves sound more important or invoking sympathy from the listener. I’ve been saying a lot less since I read that.” – Royce Vagg.

Better Living

Every day you should:

1. Make a decision that improves your health.

2. Compliment someone.

3. Do something to help the environment.

That way, you have a good excuse when your neighbor catches you planting trees on their nature strip at 3am.

Accountability

This is for all the would-be writers:

You could be writing right now. Stop browsing the internet. Even if you only write 100 words today, it’s 100 more than you’ll write browsing lolcats and 4chan for the next two hours. Yes, I see what you did there…

Writing Links

Last Updated 5th January, 2012

Most useful writing links I find I will post on my blog.

However here are the top three most important writing links a writer needs to have:

Duotrope: Duotrope is a website most useful for writers who are interested in short stories and poetry. It lists all the magazines, e-zines and publishers who are looking for different types of work, along with a word count and genre. Just type in the specs of what you’ve written and see who wants to buy it!

AgentQuery: Agent query is a list of all the literary agents in the USA, along with the genres they are interested in and their contact details. The single most useful site for novelists seeking agents online.

Writer Beware: Writer Beware is a website dedicated to finding and listing scams targeting writers, dodgy literary agencies and vanity publishers. It’s a vital resource to assure that the people you are dealing with are legitimate.

I also have a collective network of friends who offer services to writers. These are people I know in real life—mostly good friends of mine—who I highly recommend if you are seeking such services.

Cover Designs: Scarlett’s designs are amazing and I think her prices are fantastic. If you’re going to spend money while self publishing your book, you need to spend it on amazing covers and fantastic editing. And Scarlett does amazing covers.

Editing Services: Barbara is a tireless and dedicated editor. If you’re looking for a lovely lady who is also super professional, look no further.

Copy Writing Services: Need copy writing services? Matt is your guy! He's all kinds of awesome and I am regularly in awe of his skills. (Please note, this is writing copy, not copyright!)

This next batch of links are friends of mine-people I think a genuinely awesome just because they're nice to me. The fact most of them are brilliantly talented writers is just icing on the cake.

Catherine Grant - is a wonderfully forgiving person who never complains when I promise to do things for her and never get around to it. She also founded a writer's group and has some wonderful fiction on her site.

Diane Finlay - is a brilliantly talented woman who isn't quite famous yet, but probably will be soon. She does remarkable things like being on the Cairns Tropical Writer's Festival Committee and writing children's books, which are both skill-sets that elude me.
